Rare Bird Interiors is owned & curated by Tallahassee native, Jackie Skelding. She opened her first shop, CURIO, located in Railroad Square Arts District in 2014 at the age of 21 and received her degree in Retail Merchandising, Product Development and Design from Florida State University the same year. She opened the first location of Rare Bird next door to CURIO in November 2021, creating an oasis for those looking for curated goods for self & home— two unique brands within one business. Rare Bird’s popularity rapidly grew amongst locals and design-savvy buyers throughout the south. Her expansion to a second Rare Bird showroom in Midtown opened at 122 E Sixth Avenue in Tallahassee on March 15, 2024.
Just a few short weeks later on May 10, 2024, multiple tornados hit Tallahassee and demolished her then fiancé’s shop, Talquin Trading Co and severely flooded her original Railroad Square location. After many months of reconstruction, Gregg & Jackie re-opened Gregg’s shop, Talquin Trading Co in the former Rare Bird & CURIO locations, so both Talquin Trading Co and Rare Bird could flourish in their “new” homes. Rare Bird is proud to own their one and only permanent showroom on Sixth Avenue in Midtown, located inside a historic 1950’s TV repair shop, which Jackie herself restored from the ground-up prior to opening in 2024, returning the space to it’s original glory, complete with exposed brick walls and original industrial lighting.
In addition to curating for the Rare Bird showroom, Jackie also provides private sourcing, real estate staging, and interior decorating services for residential and commercial spaces. Specializing in mid century modern & historic homes, she spends much of her time outside the shop helping client’s restore, renovate and re-design their vintage homes across Tallahassee & the Southeast. She is a proud bonus-mom to two incredible kids, dog-mom to two mischievous toy poodles, named Coconut & Hazelnut, and the owner of Skelding & Co., an antiquities and fine estate sales company that she co-owns with her now husband, Gregg Pla.
